Useful information  for new bowlers

Like many games the object of bowls is essentially simple. It can be played by any one of any age but to play consistently well demands determination concentration and practice. The indoor game is played on a square carpet and is divided into playing areas called rinks. The carpet is surrounded by ditches to catch the bowls which leave the rinks, there is a bank around on which there are markers indicating the rinks.
Players take turns to deliver their bowls from a mat at one end to a small round ball called a jack at the other. The bowls are shaped so as they take a curved path to the jack and the art of bowls is to find the correct line and weight hence the need to practice. The object of the game is to have your bowl or bowls closer to the jack than your opponent.

The game of bowls can offer a lot, it is a way of keeping mind and body fit and of making new friends. New bowlers often feel reluctant to enter friendly games but this is the ideal way to improve your game and to meet people from other clubs. We hope you find this introduction useful but the most important thing is to enjoy playing and never be afraid to ask for help or information.
